With Earth Day occurring in the same month as our show, we want to do our part to save the planet. In an effort to show the importance of recycling, I am telling the same story from our ad from 15 years ago.
When I was in the 8th grade I took a private art class because a teacher in school said he saw some “untapped” potential. In my head I was thinking, “I might be the next Picasso and don’t even know it. I have to explore this God given talent.”
For the next few months I painted and learned about realism, negative space, most importantly, painting from the heart. In late August of that year I brought the canvas home to show my parents. Apparently, my heart liked a brown barn with a driveway that went straight up to the top of the canvas and never actually reached the barn. I also painted a horse that looked like it should be put down immediately. And finally, I colored the sky blue and red to show my individuality and I’m assuming the Book of Revelations.
My dad said, “Did we pay for a Paint By Numbers thing”?
Mom said, “It’s beautiful. Your father is just kidding.”
I looked at dad and said, “So...where are you going to hang it up”?
He starting laughing so hard he had to leave the room!
My parents never said they didn’t like the painting; however, the next day it was in the recycling bin at the road.
