I was in the 3rd grade and we lined up against the fence for kickball. The two captains (Josh and Steven) started selecting people for their respective teams one-by-one. A few minutes later only Linda and I were still on the fence. Back then being chosen after a girl was humiliating. And although 7 other girls had been chosen ahead of me, Linda had foot issues and we were playing kickball. She had some sort of limp thing and periodically she would fall down. And in the 2nd grade she was in a leg cast for half the year causing the muscles to atrophy on the right side of her body which was her kicking leg; however, I wasn’t sure if the captains were taking her prior injuries into account.
So to show the captains how much better I was than Linda, I started kicking my leg back and forth to display my impressive whipping action. A second later everyone got pissed off because I was kicking dirt in the air; kids started yelling, “You’re getting dirt in my eyes”. And then Josh said, “For our 9th player, we’ll take Limping Linda.” I am not lying. As she hobbled over to his side, Steven looked at me and said, “We’ll just play with 8 players”.
